About East West Organics
History
East West Organics began in Glen Eden in 1983 as a wholesale store, grinding flour. A small space was opened for retail & the 2nd set of owners transformed it into largely retail space, focussing on a plentiful supply of fresh produce. They proceeded to manufacture organic tofu.
The 3rd set of owners expanded into more dry bulk goods & groceries & added a bakery.
By 2002, the tofu business had become The Organic Soy Company (now Chalmers Organics) & the bakery, Organic Bakeworks, both flourishing in nearby Henderson. Since then, the business, choosing to be vegetarian, has expanded its floorspace & brought in as many new products as the premises could house. With the growth of the organic sector, the present owner, Peter Heywood, has endeavoured to lower prices. The main purpose of this has been to make the fresh produce, more affordable & attractive, to a range of customers wider than the original die-hard organic stalwarts.
In addition, produce moves more quickly to consumers thereby retaining freshness.
By 2005, when the long lease on the original premises ended, it was decided that it would be ideal to move somewhere offering more retail space, as well as easier access & parking.
In December 2005, the business moved along West Coast Road, into Glen Eden village.
We now have a spacious bright shop, where it is far easier to display the growing number of products.
Aims
We encourage consumers to consider the benefits of eating well.
We provide foods which are tasty, delectable, locally produced wherever possible, seasonal, as fresh as possible, wholesome, nutritious, often raw material, regularly requiring quite a lot of “YOU” & sometimes seemingly “foreign”.
What we stand for
To the best of our knowledge our foods are devoid of fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides, irradiation, genetic modification, preservatives, or unnecessary fillers.
As many as possible, comply with national or international organic certification standards.
Our Non-Food products are sourced from those producers using ingredients, least likely to create harmful side-effects in humans or the environment.
